General Notes: There is conflicting information on Oscar Simmons' birth:
1. Oscar Simmons may have come from either Bridgeport CT or possibly fr om the Midwest. He was probably born in the 1850's - 1870's.
2. Oscar born in Seward - Nov 1867
3. May have found Oscar's parents. Found a two year old Oscar in the 18 70 Census in Knox NY. His parents were Tobias and Martha Simmons. Siblin gs are Cora, Charles and Viola.
4. Currrent thought is Tobias, however, there is a Chester Simmons livi ng in Seward in the 1870 census. Need to check this out.
Oscar and Carrie were married sometime in 1889. They were probably marri ed in Worcester although it is possible that it was in Richmondville.
Oscar lived in Schoharie County, NY for some time. Enough time to take a w ife, Carrie, and have 7 children. He worked for a place or man call ed A. J. Bun. Family lore had it that Oscar left her and the family some t ime early in the 1900's with a married woman, and a stolen team of hors es and was believed to have moved out to Chicago.
It appears that Oscar left Carrie in February 1915 and went to live in Alb any. No hint of scandal though that's not to say that he did run off wi th some woman. Carrie raised the kids and shows up in Bridgeport in 1918 a nd is there until 1927 when she moves to Mineola, Long Island, NY, livi ng with her daughter Dorothy and her husband.
Oscar is mentioned at Ada's Wedding (Nov 1910) and is also mentioned at Ha rry's wedding (October 1912). In 1918, Carrie is listed as the widow of Os car Simmons. He was likely just as good as dead even though in Nelson's ob ituary (1925), both his parents were listed as surviving. He is not howeve r, mentioned in Melvin's 1921 marriage announcement or Dorothy's 1933 marr iage announcement.
I believe that I found Oscar in Greenfield, NH in 1930 (census). He is liv ing with an Anna M. Olmstead, a 37 year-old niece (really?). Both are list ed as single. Anna is the sister of Melvin Olmstead, son of John Olmste ad and Alice Dibble (Carrie's sister).
This led to finding Oscar Simmons buried in Greenvale Cemetery, Greenfiel d, NH. His birth is indicated as 1867 and death as 1946. He is buried wi th Frank and Jean Helman Bauer.
Carrie is again listed as a widow in the 1930 census.

He lived in Germantown, Columbia County, NY, from about 173 0-1760, marrying Anna Margaretha Mueller in Columbia County, New Yor k, in 1749. Not much else is known about their years in Germant own. It ®s safe to say they were true to their farming roots, probably leasing and /or working on farms. Andries had little or no schooling, and never learn ed to read or write English. For that matter, he and his family spoke Germ an fluently. Andries was a God-fearing man who worshipped as a Lutheran. T he Lutheran church records in Germantown, Churchtown and Livingston Man or relate only a sketchy story, but it appears that the parents of the Lö we family at this time were Andries and Anna Margaretha Löwe. The Lap e, or Löwe, name appears in records at St. ThomasChurch, Churchtown, NY, C hrists Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germantown, NY, and Claverack Reform ed Church, Claverack, NY.

I must here mention an episode only a fellow genealogist can identify wit h. On May 28, 1999, after my visit to the Weatherwax Cemetery in East Gree nbush, NY, and with Mrs. Flora Binck, the current owner of the Andreas Wea therwax farm, I was compelled to find the exact location of the Samuel La pe property in West Sand Lake. The Weatherwax farm, situated in the East G reenbush township, is located about 1.5 miles west of the original Samu el Lape farm, which is situated in the West Sand Lake township. Duri ng my travels along Barnes Road, West Sand Lake, looking for the suspect ed Samuel Lape property, I noticed a man sitting on his house porch readi ng a magazine. I stopped to ask directions and was proud to make the acqu aintance of Mr. Rodger Sutton, who we later resolved had purchased pa rt of the original Samuel Lape property twenty-six years prior. During o ur discussion, Rodger telephoned a friend who he knew had a map of West Sa nd Lake, showing landowners in the 1830 era. His friend came over and dur ing this visit with Mr. Tom Schreiner it was discovered, while examining t he map, that indeed the property we were sitting on was part of the proper ty that was originally owned by Samuel Lape. Tom noted my name and remark ed that he had something that I might be interested in. He drove to his ho me, returning twenty minutes later with a walking-stick which he had inher ited, along with other effects, from his grandmother.
The walking-stick is a knotty wooden shaft variety with a sterling silv er handle. Engraved on the side of the handle is "A. Lape" and on the e nd of the handle are the initials "A L". Tom didn't know how his grandmoth er came to possess the walking-stick, but Tom Schreiner and Rodger Sutt on must be acknowledged for their contribution to the La pe Family Genealogy. It can only be imagined how this cane might have belo nged to Andries Lape, the son of the first German immigrant of the Lape fa mily. In all reality, the walking-stick is late 19th Century since the ha ndle is made of sterling silver and was probably owned by Alfred H. Lap e, who owned the property that is currently owned by Rodger Sutton.
I am still calculating the "probability" of three men meeting by chance a nd making two chance discoveries in two hours of conversation.

Andries Lape
1723 - 1800
Andries Löwe Lape was born between 1723 and 1730 in Livingston (East Kamp ), Columbia County, New York, the son of a German immigrant. It is not y et known who the parents of Andries Lape were, or whet her or not he was r eared by relatives due to his parents' early deaths. What is frustrati ng is that their exists no known records, other that Andries', of any oth er Löwe family members in early Columbia County records. If Andries had l iving parents or siblings in the 1730's it would appear that at least o ne name would be documented, especially considering the large family numbe rs of the period.
Following German customs of naming children, Andries' father was probab ly named Johann Teunis (Thomas) Löwe, since Andries' first born son was na med Thomas. We know that Thomas' twin, Samuel, was named after his matern al grandfather Samuel Müller, so it follows that Thomas was probably nam ed after his paternal grandfather Löwe. The mother of Andries was probab ly named Elizabeth, since his first born daughter was named Elizabeth. Sa muel Lape's oldest daughter was also named Elizabeth. Thomas Lape's olde st daughter was named Margaretha, probably named after his mother, Margare tha Müller.
Andries lived in Germantown, Columbia County, NY, from about 1730-1755, ma rrying Anna Margaretha Müller in (Germantown) Columbia County, NY, in 174 9. Anna Margaretha, born January 14, 1731, at Loonenburg (WestKamp), Gre en County, NY, was the daughter of Samuel Müller, who immigrated to Ameri ca in the 4th Palatineparty, on Captain Howlentzen's ship, embarked on Ju ne 10-19, 1709, and sailed June 21, 1709. During his immigration from Germ any, Samuel Müller married Anna Catherine Singer on July 24, 1709, at Sav oy Lutheran Church, London, England. Samuel Müller appeared on the New Yo rk Subsistence List, 2-0, 3-1. His name appeared in 1714 for a bapti sm at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, West Kamp, and he was naturalized 17 Jan uary 1715 (Albany Naturalizations). Samuel Müller's name was crossed o ut of a Livingston Debt List of 1721. His name appeared in the cens us of Queensbury, February, 1734, with wife, Anna Catherine, and childre n, Barbara, Jonas, Susanna, Andreas, Eva, Anna, Johannes, and Margareth a. Anna Margaretha Müller was confirmed atLoonenburg (West Kamp) in 174 8. It appears from the documentation that the Müller family lived at Ea st Kampand had been making the trip across the Hudson River as needed as p arishioners of West Kamp.
In 1703 Killean Van Rensselaer conveyed Claverack or the "Lower Manor", wi th the Cralo Estate at Greenbush to his younger brother Hendrick Van Renss elaer. Gore was located between Claverack and Livingston Manors, original ly part of Claverack Manor, and was patented in 1767. Claverack Manor ori ginally encompassed lands south of Kinderhook, north of Livingston Mano r, and west to the Hudson River and was the "Lower Manor" to the "Upper Ma nor" of Rensselaerwick. Henry I. Van Rensselaer married Rachel Douw in 17 65. In 1777 he was commissioned a Colonel of the Continental Forces, und er who Thomas & George Lape were soldiers. Henry I. Van Rensselaer was "pa troon" and neighbor of Andries and Anna Margaretha Lape in Claverack, Colu mbia County, NY, in the late 18th Century.
Andries and Anna Margaretha Lape moved from Germantown, Columbia, NY to Cl averack, Columbia, NY, between 1755 and 1761, their first four children be ing baptized in Germantown prior to 1756, and their remaining children bei ng baptized in Churchtown after 1760. Little is known about their yea rs in Claverack. It is safe to say Andries and Anna Margaretha were tr ue to their farming roots, having leased or purchased property in Churchto wn (Claverack), Columbia County, NY, in the "ten mile tract" of the "Low er Manor" of Rensselaerwyck. Andries Lape leased 302 acres of land in Clav erack Manor, the original date of the lease being October 28, 1774. He pa id 40 bushels of wheat, as well as 4 fowls and 2 days "riding" servi ce to the landlord, per year in rent. Andries Lape (as Andries Leap) sho ws up on the 1779 Tax List of Claverack District "West", valued at £900, t he amount of tax being £161-5-0. In Claverack, Andries and Anna Margaret ha counted as friends and neighbors the Müller's, the Neher's, the Kell s, the Reiss, the Hydorns, the Van Rensselaers, the Deckers, the Church' s, the Rainer's, the Hagedorn's, and the Clappers, among others.
Andries Lape did have a military history, although it is not known to wh at extent he served. He does show up on the list of members of the Eigh th Regiment, Albany County Militia, along with his sons, George and Thom as Lape (as Andries Laap).
Andries had schooling, but probably never learned to read or write Engli sh fluently. For that matter, he and his family, like most first-generati on immigrants, spoke German fluently. Andries was a God-fearing man who wo rshipped as a Lutheran. The Lutheran church records in Germantown, Churcht own and Livingston Manor relate only a sketchy story, but it appears th at the first generation American parents of the Löwe family were Andries a nd Anna Margaretha Löwe. The Lape, or Löwe and other variations, name appe ars in records atChrists Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germantown, NY, Re formed Church of Germantown, St. Thomas Church, Churchtown, NY, and Claver ack Reformed Church, Claverack, NY.
Rev. Joshua Kockerthal established churches in east Kamp and in West Ka mp in 1711. After his death in 1719, Rev. Falckner took over as ministe r. Rev Falckner was also pastor of the Lutheran Church of Albany from 17 03 to 1723 and he established a church in Loonenburg (Athens) in 1703. T he St. Thomas Evangelical Lutheran Church, originally known as the Luther an Church of Claverack, was a "union" between the Palatinate influence whi ch was spread from East Kamp and the Dutch Lutheran influence originati ng in Loonenburg and later taking a foothold in Claverack. St. Thomas w as established about 1745 probably by Rev. Berkenmyer. The church was n ot built in a village but rather between the settlements of Claverack a nd Livingston Manor. The church was erected in 1750 with the present edifi ce erected in 1836. It was enlarged & modernized in 1860, improved & beaut ified in 1881, remodeled & beautified in 1907, and a new bell added to t he tower in 1910. Thomas Loewe was a church officer of the congregati on of Claverack on October 8, 1791. The following received communion at t he church in 1792: Andries Loewe, Thomas Loewe & frau Maria, and Jacob Loe we & frau Catherine.

A special "Thank You" to Warren F. Broderick for much of the following inf ormation regardin g grandfather in
"John Hidley of Greenbush, Rensselaer County, NY and His Descendants," Apr il 1982:
"In 1789 in Baltmannsweiler in the Duchy of Würtemberg, the New York merch ant Peter Koch appeared. He bought with him a letter of Johannes Heid le of Rensselaerwyck near Albany, who had emigrated with his family in 17 54 from the above-mentioned town. This letter was an authorization to rece ive the inheritance of himself or his wife. But the heirs showed a lett er of Johannes Heidle from 1735, in which he waived a claim on the inherit ance. The lawsuit came to the government of the Dukedom and was still runn ing in 1791 , the outcome being unknown to me."
"The records with the two letters of Johannes Heidle are at the Wurttember gisches Hauptstaats archive in Stuttgart (registration no. A213 Buschel 33 00). These letters are interesting documents for the conditions of immigra nts into New York State and are quoted here. My transcription of the lette rs has been translated by Ben White, an American college student in German y." The letters follow:
"1785 the 22nd of August
God be with us at all times. Dear relatives, may the grace of G od be with us all,
Amen. I came to America in the year 1754 into the colony of N ew York, residing in
Albany County one hour and a half up from the river, reside nt in Rensselaerwyck.
I am a farmer or yeoman here, married to Michael Zieglers daught er Catharina.
When we had been in the country three weeks my father-in-law die d. I had him
buried at the Camp. Dear brothers and sisters, what trouble the re was! I was the
only one of the family at the burial. My dear wife Catharina a nd my sister-in-law
Maria went to pieces. His widow, my mother-in-law, I took in to my house. She died
on 17 December 1778, Anna Ziegler. I suffered a great deal in t he two wars.
I wish my greetings to all the sisters and brothers. I am sti ll healthy, thank God,
and also my wife Catharina, as long as God wills. We had 12 chil dren, 9 still living:
the first-born Anna Elisabetha, 2 Susanna, 3 Catharina, 4 Barbar a, 5 Maria, 6
Johannes, 7 Jeri Georg, 8 Michael, and 9 Anna. Dear relative s, we have plenty to
eat and drink. We are blessed with horses, oxen, cattle, shee p, and hogs. My
sister-in- law Maria Ziegler is married to Konelis Schleiter, n ot far from me, a
well-to-do man - enough of everything. They both send a greeti ng to her two
brothers Gottfried Meier and Hans Jerg Ziegler and all the cousi ns.
Dear relatives:
I, poor child, could speak about the time since I have been aw ay from you as
Isaiah does in the 38th chapter, verses 14-17. Hezekiah pray ed to the Lord; may He
also help me. No cross shall drive me away from my God, howev er heavy it may be.
My Father, You will stay with me. 0 take me into Thy bosom. In a ffliction, misery,
and. distress of age I rely on my God. Now then, I trust in Go d, that everything
may go as it pleases God. I remain firm in the belief that God d oes not forsake him
who relies on Him, for whoever relies on his God will be helped.
Dear relatives, I have been away from you for a long time a nd I dont know to
whom I should write now. I dont think my father is still livin g. It could be that my
(?step)mother is still living. Is my brother Michael Heidle sti ll alive? I send my
greeting. Is my sister Barbara, Leonhardt Baurs wife, still aliv e? My dear sister - I
wish that she were with me! I would take care of her as lo ng as I live. Dear sister, I
want to do something good for you. I send my greetings, a thousa nd greetings, to
all relatives and cousins, as well as to all of Baltmannsweiler.
