| James O'Rourke, known as "The
Orator" for his clever and robust use of the English
language is Bridgeport, CT's only Baseball Hall of Famer. He
played in the 1870s through 1900. and was inducted into the
Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945. He holds the distinction of
getting the first hit in the first game of the National
League on April 22, 1876. He is buried in Bridgeport. His
house still remains, although it is in pretty sad shape.
The First Hit is a
non-profit organization that is raising money to move the
house and convert it into a museum dedicated to Jim
O'Rourke, Bridgeport baseball and Irish Heritage. If you are
